Lead, Kindly Light

John Henry Cardinal Newman, alt.
(1801-1890)
Mary Oberle Hubley, text Ed.

Verses:

1.) Lead, Kindly Light! Lead, Kindly Light,
Amid the'encircling gloom.
Lead thou me on! The night is dark,
And I am far from home;
And I am far from home.

2.) Lead Thou me on! Keep thou my feet;
I do not ask to see
The distant scene. Keep thou my feet;
One step enough for me,
One step enough for me.

Refrain: (opt. After every second verse)

Lead, Kindly Light!
Lead Thou me on.
Lead on, lead Kindly Light!

3.) I was not ever thus, nor prayed
That Thou shouldst lead me on.
I loved to choose and see my path
But now, lead Thou me on;
But now lead Thou me on.

4.) Lead, Kindly Light! Lead Thou me on!
I loved the garish day.
And spite of fears, pride ruled my will:
Remember not past years;
Remember not past years.

Refrain: Lead, Kindly Light!
Lead Thou me on!
Lead on, lead Kindly Light.

5.) So long Thy power hath blest me,
Sure it still will lead me on.
O'er moor and fen, o'er crag and torrent,
'Til the night is gone,
'Til night, the night is gone.

6.) Lead Thou me on! And with the morn
Those angel faces smile
Which I have loved long since and lost;
Long since and lost awhile,
Long since and lost awhile.

Refrain: Lead, Kindly Light!
Lead Thou me on!
Lead on, lead, Kindly Light.
